For the seventh time and after a brief absence, Section Five Lacrosse leadership has selected first, second and honorable mention lists of All-Section players. # 2884  Brighton Wins in Overtime Again

Brighton fought back from a two goal deficit at the end of the third quarter to defeat Pittsford in overtime 10-9.  The Barons and Panthers played a back and forth game with both teams leading before Pittsford took a two goal lead at the end of the third quarter. Brighton’s defense held the Panthers scoreless for the final 13 minutes of regulation and another 3 minutes in overtime.

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: Webster Schroeder fought back from a four goal deficit to defeat Churchville-Chili 9-8 in the first overtime period. The Warriors scored the final five goals for the win and held the Saints scoreless for 13 minutes. STORY CONTINUES

# 2854  Lots of Close Ones

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were several one-goal games today and some were unexpected wins. Fairport(6-1) needed overtime to defeat a scrappy Thomas(3-6) 8-7 and Penfield(4-5) used overtime to beat Victor(7-2) 7-6. Meanwhile Pittsford(5-4) was a 7-6 winner over Canandaigua(8-2). Spencerport(2-5) defeated Rush-Henrietta(5-4) with a scored of 9-7 and Hilton(6-2) took out Schroeder(4-4) 9-5.

# 2852  Pittsford Wins 7-6 in Regulation

Pittsford and Canandaigua played a back and forth contest with neither team leading by more than two.  The Panthers won 7-6 after scoring three straight to span the third and fourth quarters.  During their scoring stretch, they held the Braves scoreless for 22 minutes.  The goal scoring was spread out for the Panthers with three players scoring two goals each (Ben DiGiovanni, Ryan Dumont and Sonny Imburgia).  Harrison Cross led in scoring with 4a on the game.

# 2821  Pittsford Secures 9-6 Win over Schroeder

Pittsford scored the opening goal and although Schroeder kept it close, they never forced a tie in the Panthers 9-6 win over the Warriors.  Pittsford took the game to a 4 goal lead twice, including once in the fourth quarter (9-5); however, Schroeder also brought the score within 2 twice, including once in the third quarter (7-5).  Pittsford face-off midfielder Danny Maggio finished 10/18 with a team leading six ground balls.  Defenseman Patrick Sanna also recorded six groundballs.  Attackman Sonny Imburgia finished with 3 recorded takes for the Panthers.  For Schroeder, Travis Dear led with 5 groundballs.  In the cage, Evan Alfano recorded 13 saves.

# 2816  Out of Section Teams Won Many Today

Saturday: DAY IN REVIEW: R-H won their third game with a win against Livonia-Avon. After leading for the majority of three quarters, RH had to fight back in the final five minutes to defeat Livonia-Avon 10-9. The Royal Comets had not scored in over 12 minutes when Nick Cowie scored the game winning goal with 0:17 left in regulation. (Story Continues).

# 2815  Pittsford Falls to St. Joseph

After a close three quarter, St. Joseph’s Collegiate pulled away with eight unanswered goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to defeat Pittsford 12-7.  The Marauders were led in scoring by Evan Mulderig with 5g-1a.  He played a role in half of the St. Joseph goals.  Pittsford was led in scoring by Ryan Dumont (2g-12a) and Sonny Imburgia (1g-2a).

# 1417  Fairport Advances to Finals

Top Seeded Fairport defeated fourth seeded Pittsford 8-5 in the first of the two double header Semi-Final matchups.  The Red Raiders took off in the second quarter and the Panthers couldn’t keep pace.  Fairport moves on to the Finals for the second consecutive time.   The last time that Fairport won the big game was in 2014.

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: The quarter final rounds in Classes A and C held with the higher seeded teams winning their games. Pittsford had a 6-3 win over Hilton, Penfield won their game with East United and Greece Storm had a 9-6 win over Rush-Henrietta. In Class C, Newark defeated Eastridge, Wayne ended Batavia's season and HF-L beat Livonia-Avon.

# 1389  FM Defeats Pittsford

Fayetteville-Manlius scored the first three goals of the game and although Pittsford tied the game three times, the Hornets never let go of the lead in their 8-6 win.  FM’s opener was scored with an outside shot by Nick Papa.  Papa finished with 3g-2a to lead his team.  Two minutes later, Chris Lubrino scored on a fast-break goal.

And then there were none, as the last undefeated team lost. In a greatly anticipated game this afternoon, the Blue Devils took a four goal lead and never lost it, even though the Tttans scored three goals in the last eight minutes to bring the game within one. Victor saw offense from eight different players with Camden Hay leading with 3g and Sam Lambert added 3a. Trevor Ford led the Titans with four goals, two of which were scored in the last minute of the game.

Thursday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were fourteen games played today, some in the snow, but all in the cold. Most games were not very close but Mynderse fought back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Waterloo 8-7. Penfield defeated Pittsford and Midlakes beat the Pride. Victor, Gananda and Thomas all remain undefeated.

# 1354  Pittsford Holds Off Against Fairport

Pittsford scored the game opener and although Fairport forced a single tie, the Panthers never trailed in their 7-6 win over the Red Raiders.  Harrison Cross scored the opening goal 1:59 into the first quarter.  Ryan Dumont, who led the Panthers with 2g-1a, got his assist on the opening goal.  Matt Powers scored the second Panther goal less than two minutes later.  The Red Raiders responded with two goals of their own to force the tie.  Colin Peers and Klay Stuver scored for Fairport.

# 1350  Burley Scores Game Winning Goal in Second OT

After a game that was tied at every step, Senior Alex Burley scored his fourth goal in the second overtime period to give Canandaigua their second overtime win of the season over Pittsford 7-6.  The Braves improve to 3-1 after their overtime wins vs. Penn Yan last week and Pittsford this week.  Burley was key in their victory, scoring both the game tying and game winning goals.

# 1330  Pittsford holds Off C-C for win

Pittsford scored five unanswered goals spanning the first and second quarters to secure their 10-6 win over Churchville-Chili.  The Saints scored the opening goal and kept the game close for the first quarter.  Pittsford took over in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead that the Saints couldn’t come back from.  Churchville-Chili continued to fight and brought the game within two late in the game but could not get any closer.

Pittsford Offensive midfielder (A/M), Sonny Imburgia recently announced his commitment to SUNY Binghamton. After earning a spot on the Class A All-Tournament team, Sonny added 11-4a in the post-season to end his sophomore season with 31-g-15a.

# 1275  Class A State Title - Ward Melville over Pittsford

After trailing by five with 4:26 remaining, Ward Melville scored the final six goals of the game to win the Class A State Championship 10-9 in the first overtime period.  Tournament MVP Eddie Munoz scored three of the five goals to force overtime and was a key offensive player for the Patriots.  Defensive MVP Michael Giaquinto was also demonstrative in the win.  He finished 19/22 (86%) at the face off and gave Ward Melville multiple extra attempts at the ball.  His pick-ups allowed four goals in the final 1:01.  Matthew Grillo finished with 3g-1a including the game tying and game winning goals.  Later in the day, the Pittsford girls also played in the State Finals.  Just like the boy’s game, the girl’s matchup went to overtime after a 9-9 tie in regulation.  Pittsford girls defeated Middle Country 10-9 (HERE).

# 1269  Pittsford Makes State Finals for First Time

Pittsford dominated the second half and defeated Baldwinsville (Section III) 11-8 to advance to the Class A State Finals.  The Panthers will face Ward Melville on Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. John Fisher.  The Patriots defeated Lakeland-Panas 9-6 to advance to the Finals.  Colby Barker led in scoring with 5g-1a for the Panthers and was a force on the field.  For the Bees, Matthew Dickman and Peter Fiorini each finished with 2g.

# 1268  Looking Ahead: Upstate Championships

At this point only the final four are left and in each class there are two teams in the Upstate Tournaments and two are in the Downstate Tournaments. As Wednesday is a school day, the games have been split with the Class A and Class B games being played in Rochester (St. John Fisher College) and the Class C and Class D being played in Syracuse (CNS). Downstate , Class B and Class B will be played at SUNY Albany and the Class C and Class D games will be played at Adelphi University. The winners will play for the State Championships on Saturday at St. John Fisher College (Rochester).

Section Five representative Pittsford defeated Section Six representative Orchard Park 20-6 in the Western Regional Championship.  The Panthers scored the first seven goals of the match and held the Quakers scoreless for the first 18:49. Pittsford finished with 13 different players making their offensive book.  Leading the charge was Brandon Barker 4g-1a.

The All Tournament Teams for 2017 were announced at each final. MVPs for A and C were Colby Barker (Pittsford) and James Blazey (Pal-Mac). In the Class B, the award went to Andrew Russell (Victor) and in the class D it went to Connor Finger (Penn Yan).

Pittsford won their fifth Section Five Championship with a 9-5 win over Fairport.  The Panthers won their last Championship in 2015 with an 11-6 win over Penfield (HERE).  Pittsford took off and scored the first six goals before the Red Raiders got on the board.  The Panther defense held Fairport scoreless for 28 minutes.

# 1245  Pittsford Makes Finals for 4th Straight Year

Top seeded Pittsford defeated fourth seeded Hilton 13-5 in the first of the two back-to-back Semi-Final matchups played at Webster Thomas.  The game was a close for the first half, before Pittsford scored five unanswered in the third quarter and pulled ahead.  The Cadets scored the final goal of the game, but Pittsford scored eight unanswered goals, spanning the second through fourth quarters.  Pittsford advances to the Finals for the sixth time in eight years (2 wins in 2015 and 2011; 3 losses in 2016, 2014 and 2010).
